Cirio partner Olle Asplund helps shape the future regulatory framework for fintech
New regulations are reshaping the business environment for Swedish fintech companies. As a board member of the Swedish FinTech Association (SweFinTech), Olle Asplund, Partner and Head of Financial Regulation at Cirio, contributes to the industry’s dialogue with regulators and policymakers. His involvement also provides valuable insight into the issues affecting fintech businesses and their growth.
Olle joined SweFinTech’s board in April 2026. The association brings together more than 100 Swedish fintech companies operating in areas including payments, lending, crypto, crowdfunding and investments. It provides a forum for collaboration and represents the industry on issues affecting its operating environment and competitiveness.
“SweFinTech creates opportunities for collaboration and knowledge sharing, while also representing the industry in discussions with regulators and policymakers. The aim is to give Swedish fintech companies the best possible conditions to remain innovative and competitive, both in Sweden and internationally,” says Olle Asplund.
Bringing the industry’s perspective to regulatory developments
A key part of SweFinTech’s work is to ensure that the industry’s perspective informs new regulations. The association regularly responds to consultations issued by bodies including the Swedish Government Offices, the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority and Sveriges Riksbank. Alongside his board responsibilities, Olle plays an active role in preparing these responses.
“The consultation process gives us an opportunity to put forward our members’ views on legislative proposals and contribute to discussions about the rules affecting their businesses. This year, I have drafted responses on the European Commission’s cybersecurity package and AMLA’s proposed guidelines on business-wide risk assessments. I am also currently working on the association’s response concerning the EU’s anti-money laundering package.”
Industry insight that informs client advice
At Cirio, Olle leads the Financial Regulation practice, advising financial services businesses on matters including banking law, consumer credit, payment services, open banking, anti-money laundering and electronic money. Having worked both in private practice and as general counsel at fintech companies, he has first-hand experience of putting regulatory requirements into practice in day-to-day operations.
His role on SweFinTech’s board complements this experience with a broader industry perspective and a close understanding of the issues at the top of fintech companies’ agendas.
“Being on SweFinTech’s board gives me direct insight into the issues that matter most to the industry today. It also gives me an opportunity to help shape the rules that both the association’s members and my clients will need to comply with. It is a role I learn a great deal from and thoroughly enjoy.”
